New General Catalog is pleased to present Round Here, Darri Lorenzen's
first solo exhibition in New York City. Lorenzen’s mixed
media works emphasize spatial dynamics, where the show location is cast
in the leading role and the viewer’s awareness/perception is the
dominant subject matter.
Lorenzen often works with sound installations and site-specific photographs
to create a sense of dislocation. Both the artwork and viewer’s
interaction with the space itself is subtle yet potent. At the Ballhaus
Ost in Berlin earlier this year, Lorenzen exhibited Catch the Drift,
an installation consisting of an oscillating fan situated on a wooden
trunk. The appliance was outfitted with two tiny microphones that amplified
the whirring sounds as it rotated back and forth. With this slight adjustment
in decibels, the manipulated aural experience transcended the expectations
of the visual object, heightening one and diminishing the other, confusing
what we hear, who is actually listening to us, and what we feel upon such
an encounter.
Darri Lorenzen was born in Reykjavik, Iceland (1978) and currently lives
and works in Berlin. He has exhibited internationally at a number of galleries
and museums, most recently the Kunsthalle Loppem in Belgium. Lorenzen
received his education at the Kunsthochsule Berlin-Weissensee, the Icelandic
Academy of the Arts, and Royal Academy of Arts & Royal Conservatory
in The Hague, The Netherlands.
