“Prophetic balance” is achieved when an artist (Fahamu
Pecou) obtains and disseminates a vision through their artwork
that alters more accepted perceptions. In doing so, the artist absorbs
the challenge of creating a safe space where new ideas can develop without
resistance and the visceral reaction to the artist’s work becomes
apart of the discourse thereby producing a new paradigm without the use
of judgment. Ultimately, an artist who maintains “prophetic balance”
possesses the responsibility of remaining true to their mission and its
revelations while simultaneously embracing the consequences.
About the curator
Ingrid LaFleur received her BA from Spelman College in Art History
and then went on to New York University for her MA in Individualized Study
concentrating on Museum Studies and Sociology. She has curated exhibitions
of emerging artists in New York and travels internationally to develop
a network of emerging and mid-career artists. In 2004, LaFleur founded
Amrita Arts, Inc. whose mission is to increase awareness and accessibility
of contemporary art. Most recently, Amrita Arts exhibited Fahamu Pecou’s
new paintings this summer at the Pool Art Fair in New York. In addition
to producing exhibitions, Amrita Arts produces a monthly e-newsletter,
Promiscuous Eye, which discusses emerging artists, exhibitions
and issues in the art world. She currently resides in Atlanta, GA.
